In 1975, AKRA began their first projects in commercial construction. AKRA's home office was constructed in 1979 adjacent to the old National Trail (Highway 40) between Effingham and Teutopolis, Illinois.

AKRA celebrated their 15th year in business in 1988 as they started work on the Effingham County Jail Renovation, the first $1,000,000 project for the firm. In 1993, Paul J. Grunloh became an owner and President of AKRA Builders, Inc. Under Mr. Grunloh's leadership, AKRA has experienced tremendous growth in general commercial contracting. In 1997, AKRA became a national firm as they completed their first out-of-state project in Apex, North Carolina. By 1998, AKRA has constructed more than $80,000,000 in projects since the founding of the firm.
